LITURGICAL MUSIC FOR THE SEASON OF ADVENT

After the long season of Ordinary Time, the music of the Advent season greets us like a breath of fresh air. But there is so much music and so little time in which we sing it! This is especially true during particular year when the season is only three weeks long.

Catholic parishes are universally laudable in their rising above pressures to anticipate the musical repertory of Christmas. That’s the easy part. But keeping the spirit of Advent celebration distinct in other ways will surely follow if we immerse ourselves in the intricately evocative texts of the season and faithfully use all our imagination. The Church and her liturgy can become a welcome refuge from the more tawdry manifestations of commercial “holiday season” around us. Music is utterly a key in this. The occasional ill-instructed worshipper, who complains that he or she wants “carols that will get me into the Christmas spirit” throughout the December madness, surely knows that the local shopping mall will minister to that “need” better than we can. The music of the Catholic Church is busily going about other, and very important, concerns. And the “Christmas spirit” we know is not what the world knows nor, oftentimes, is our music.

Refrain from using Christmas music (this includes music for the Fourth Sunday of Advent) until the Christmas Liturgies themselves occur. Christmas tunes, both religious and secular, may have been surrounding us and even before Advent, but for the liturgy the Christmas season does not begin until Christmas Eve.

Marking off Advent from other days and seasons: If you usually have busily festive instrumental music before Mass, try having only the most meditative. If you usually have elaborately meditative music, try having sparse music there, or none at all.

A choir might sing some simple invitatory chant. Or, if you begin Mass with a metrical hymn, you might preface it with the proper entrance antiphon from the Graduale romanum (if your music ministers are practically skilled) or from the Graduale simplex (even if they’re not). Catechesis on those texts and their communion counterparts is itself a course in Advent celebration.

The repertoire of music and psalmody for the advent season is enormous. While we have our old favorites, examine the diversity of the available music that will function during Advent as we move from the eschatological focus to the incarnational focus. Live, instrumental and liturgical music can help create a mood. Acapella singing of an entire hymn or verse of a hymn can create an atmosphere of longing and expectation.

Hymns about Saint John the Baptist are especially fitting on the second and third Sundays of Advent. Those are the days when the gospel tells some aspect of John’s life and ministry. This is true every year during Advent.

Hymns of the Virgin Mary will be especially appropriate on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, as well as on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, when the gospel tells part of the story leading up to the birth of Jesus.

Gospel Acclamation: You might choose an Alleluia that will last throughout the season. As always, the verse would change, but the lectionary groups them into those of the first (#192) and second (#201) parts of the season. The first set features scriptures that announce the coming of the Savior together with non-scriptural proclamations of the same hope. The second group represents the O Antiphons from Evening Prayer. These seven verses are completely interchangable, but careful planning will unite them to the Magnificat antiphon sung that evening or the previous one.

The suppression of the singing of the Gloria during this time, does not indicate penance or of penitential character, but allows the angelic hymn to be sung anew on Christmas Eve. The Gloria in excelsis Deo is omitted on the Sundays of Advent. This streamlines the entrance rites and derives the liturgy more directly towards the scriptures. When the hymn returns at Christmas, it will lift hearts high in joy. A temporary abstention should help us not to fall into routine and to make a better and more conscious use of this beautiful hymn afterwards.

The Gloria is omitted during Advent. By reserving the Gloria for the festive season of Christmas, the liturgy emphasizes Advent’s character as a season of anticipation. The Gloria is not omitted in Advent for the same reason it is omitted in Lent. Rather, its omission heightens our anticipation and longing for the night of Christmas on which the angels’ song rings out anew. In practical terms, the omission of the Gloria also allows us to move quickly to the collect and the Liturgy of the Word.

The words “Gloria in excelsis Deo” are so characteristic of Christmas that their rubrical omission from Sunday Masses in Advent is just common sense, but “Glory to God in the highest” has its Advent role nevertheless. Plus the fact that the festive commemoration of the Immaculate Conception falls in Advent gives us a chance to prepare for Christmas in a different way from that of the Advent Sundays. Not only does December 8 have its Gloria, but singing the same Gloria then that you’ll sing on Christmas makes a lot of sense. One way, after all, of preparing for the December 25 solemnity is by making sure everyone is ready to sing out with joy on a song central to Christmas’ essential character. Second, it allows Mary’s feast to serve Christ’s in something of the way Mary’s ministry assists His, even in a musical detail. Third, the liturgy already gives us a hint of this function by its Responsorial Psalm, which is the same psalm on Immaculate Conception as at the Mass during the Day on Christmas (and the other two Christmas Masses sing from the immediately preceding and thematically connected numbers of the psalter). Consider finding a way (be it bells other percussion, distinctive tune, or placement of singers in a special antiphonal arrangement around the church) to highlight the connection of these psalms. Music can make all kinds of liturgical and theological connections on conscious and unconscious levels.

For Eucharistic Prayer Acclamations try using one set throughout Advent and on into Christmas. People will be able to sing these as true acclamations if they stop wondering which one it will be this week. This practice also gives the season an identifiable sound. You might even use the same set each year to help people make more associations between the music and the season. Any of the memorial acclamations may be sung, but the first three announce the theme of Christ’s coming better than the last does.

Even in Advent, you may still want the Eucharistic acclamations to keep the exuberant mood of high celebration that can always attend those signal moments. It’s also possible to let them partake of some of the restraint of the season (here being another place where local expectations and experience will dictate the best practices).

If you do a “Recessional Song,” “Closing Hymn,” “Sending Forth,” or “Hymn at the Dismissal” (the variations of terminology demonstrating the optional nature of that song not envisioned in the Ordo Missae), you might consider uniting the Sundays with a single song, repeated each week. The Taize “Wait for the Lord” fills the bill nicely. Parishioners say that its tune-with-words haunts their meditations year round.

The tradition of using music that is more “subdued” during the season has been given predominance by the direction in article 313 of the new GIRM: “In advent the organ and other musical instruments should be used in moderation that is consistent with the season’s character and dos not anticipate the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord.” This stops short of the direction regarding Lent, which limits instruments to the accompaniment of singing. Yet it certainly calls for the music to be more simple and unadorned than in the other seasons. Even aside from the texts that are sung, a worshipper should sense that the music sounds like Advent.

During Advent musical instruments should be played with a moderation that is in keeping with the spirit of joyful expectation characteristic of this season but does not anticipate the fullness of joy belonging to the celebration of the nativity of the Lord. It is necessary that a committee should screen the candidates on their skills and moral standing in the community.

Recommendation letters signed by the parish priest should be submitted by fax at least two weeks before the scheduled formation. The original should be submitted on the day itself. This will be for the preparation of the handouts.

Dear brothers in Christ,

Liturgical celebrations must be distinguished by grace, simplicity and order. In diocesan and parish liturgical celebrations, the master of ceremonies is tasked to coordinate the planning, preparations and actual celebrations of the liturgy. The master of ceremonies should be well-versed in the history, theology and pastoral aspects of the liturgy (cf. Ceremonial of Bishops, 24). This requisite knowledge facilitates planning and preparation of the faithful.

Considering the important role of the Master of Ceremonies plays in our liturgical life, the Ministry of Altar Servers of the Diocesan Ministry for Liturgical Affairs will be offering a Basic Workshop for Parish MCs on 28 February, 6 March and 13 March from 6:00 until 9:00 in the evening at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Multi-purpose Building.

Participants must:

be appointed and highly recommended by the parish priest (with accompanying letter of appointment)
have basic knowledge of the liturgy
be a senior altar server (not necessarily by age nor years in service)
have the capability to direct liturgical celebration

Participants are to submit their recommendation letters signed by the parish priest a week before the seminar to facilitate the preparations of materials. You may fax it through 7237847. Participants without recommendation letters will not be entertained. The registration fee is Php 1000 for the dinner, venue, speakers and materials.

PASTORAL LETTER TO PRIESTS, RELIGIOUS, AND LAY FAITHFUL OF THE DIOCESE OF CUBAO

“We ought to thank God always for you, brethren, as is fitting, because your faith flourishes ever more, and the love of every one of you for one another grows ever greater.”(2 Thes 1:3)

On the occasion of the 4^th anniversary of the Diocese of Cubao on August 28, 2007, let us join hands in thanking the Lord for all the blessings He has bestowed on us the past years. Like Mary we praise and magnify the Lord for all the wonderful things he has done. With humility, we continue to ask the Lord to guide us and help us bring to completion what He has started in our diocese in terms of vision, mission, goals and pastoral priorities.

I thank God for the priests of Cubao. They are not prefect and yet they always aim for excellence in their priestly life and ministry. Indeed, they are important partners and companions in building the local Church and in carrying our much needed evangelization work. In spite of the lack of priests even with the presence of guests priests among us, whose work we value and esteem, our priests continue to invest time and talent in ensuring that the different diocesan offices are managed well and the various pastoral programs implemented effectively. Thank you for taking seriously the mission that Jesus, our Good Shepherd, had entrusted to us. I see that the brotherhood you have as a presbyterium is truly a treasure to the diocese and an inspiration to me. Today more than ever, we need to affirm this brotherhood in order to face with honesty and openness the tensions created by the recent general reshuffle, to finalize our program for sabbatical leave, to put into action our plan for our Bahaypari, to solidify our clergy tithing program, to evaluate our standardization program, and to ensure by our support and encouragement that we sustain the zeal of every priest, especially the new ones, in order to remain faithful until the end.

I thank God for our lay people. Your support and participation in various ministries and pastoral programs in the diocesan and parochial levels are indeed commendable. Together we tried to give life to nine priorities, that is, the nine point agenda, which we believe are concerns that merit our outmost attention. Thank you for being part of the different pastoral teams that make the ministries work. Thank you for participating in the different formation programs that we continue to hold. Formation is a priority for we believe that it is through formation that we become empowered. In a special way, I commend the organizers and faithful participants of the lay pastoral assembly. We need to come together, clergy and lay people, and work together to make our diocese more alive and dynamic. Together let us ensure that every community in our parishes become a Basic Ecclesial Community, that every Filipino family lives as a true Christian family, that genuine service and long-term development is brought to the poorest of the poor among us, that no Filipino child among us is ignorant of his or her faith because we lack catechists, that every young Filipino among us is able to harness his/her energy and youthfulness for the service of the Church and the greater glory of God. I am grateful for we have already achieved so much, but still much is to be done. With you my dear lay people we can overcome.

I thank God for the religious men and women. Your presence in the diocese is truly a gem that reminds all of us to continue seeking for the “pearl of great price.” Thank you for being faithful witnesses of what is truly beautiful, worthwhile and lasting in this life. Your presence is service enough for us, but deep in my heart I know that working closely together can bring more good to our diocese. I invite you to explore with me how the charisms of your congregation can truly enrich the life of the diocese and how the diocese can be a partner in promoting your apostolate and ministries. Thank you for welcoming me warmly to your houses to celebrate the Eucharist, to administer confirmation, to lead you in your profession, in ordination, in the renewal of your vows. Now, I humbly ask you to welcome me to your houses as we discover how can the diocese can be of help to you and how you can be of help to the diocese.

Our vision, one with the vision of the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines, is to be a Church of the poor. Poverty continue to be a major obstacle for many of our fellow Filipinos to live a dignified and decent life as children of a loving Father. I Thank those who are involved in implementing programs that directly affect the least, the last and the lost among us. Still, much is to be done. Solidarity with the poor is achieved primarily by the simplicity of our life. Let us organize more programs and opportunities to make the “unchurched” become part of every parish’s life. One diocesan program that will directly benefit the poorest among us is the Stewardship program. We give not because of a need; we give because we need to give. I am thankful because some parishes in our diocese are already doing the stewardship program, but I dream for the day when all the parishes in Cubao practice stewardship.

Let us continue to pray and work together giving witness to Christ in the way we do our different responsibilities with love, zeal and enthusiasm.

Communion Hymns:

For Ascension Thursday/Sunday

However exalted Sundays are, save something for the next pinnacle after the Second Sunday of Easter: the Ascension. If it’s on Thursday, you won’t have your festive sprinkling song that you may have been using on Sundays, so you may want to look at how you can keep your entrance rite special without it. Your music can say, “This is a special solemnity, but it’s also another stage of Easter” – the more subliminally, the better. For example, if you’ve been singing “Christ the Lord is Ris’n Today” to LLANFAIR, you might now sing “Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise” (by the same poet) to the same tune. There’s also a more recent Ascension Hymn to that tune, “Let the Earth Rejoice and Sing”. Fortunately, many hymns for Christ the King are appropriate for Ascension as well.

The Music for the last day of the Easter should be especially festive, and the use of several languages to echo the coming together of many peoples and nations is very appropriate.

When choosing an opening song, use the text of the Entrance antiphon as a a guide: “The Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world … and knows every word spoken by man.”

When it comes to Pentecost, we echoe the Easter Octave by singing a sequence and the double Alleluia at the dismissal. Be on the look out for other ways of marking the time. Psalm 104 was the first psalm for the Easter Vigil, following the story of creation. It returns on this last da of Easter, but notice that different verse are chosen to give more emphasis to the Holy Spirit. For example, the very first psalm we sang in Eastertime was probably the “Lord, send out Your Spirit” option that followed the creation story at the Easter Vigil. Now it reappears as our last responsorial psalm for Easter, on Pentecost. Again don’t let the Sequence fall flat through a laudable aim to use the traditional tune. The Taize “Veni Sancte Spiritus” can be allowed to build wonderfully and provides text options for multi-lingual assemblies.

Sa banal na tatlong araw matapos ang Kuwaresma, ipinagdiriwang ng buong Simbahan ang pinakadakilang misteryo ng ating kaligtasan – ang pagpapakasakit, kamatayan at muling pagkabuhay ng ating Panginoon, ang kaganapang nagdulot ng ating kalayaan mula sa kasalanan at kamatayan, nagbigay-daan upang makapagkaisa tayo sa Diyos Ama at nagdulot na magkaroon ng Simbahang ikinasal kay Kristo sa krus. Ito ang pinakapuso ng ating pananampalataya, ang misteryo na nagbibigay-kahulugan sa ating pagka-Kristiyano at pagiging Simbahan. Ganito na lamang katindi at kabigat ang laman ng mga araw na ito kung kaya’t sa buong taon, ito ang pinakatangi at pinakadakilang mga araw. Ito na ang pinakapuso at pinakarurok ng taong-liturhikal. Sa pamamagitan ng pagdiriwang nito, sa mga ritwal at salita, nararanasan at nadadala natin sa kasalukuyan ang gawaing pagliligtas ng Panginoon. Nakiki-isa tayo kay Kristo, na siyang ulo ng Simbahan, sa kanyang ginawang pag-aalay ng kanyang sarili at muling pagkabuhay alang-alang sa atin. Sa pag-alala at pagsasa-ngayon natin ng kanyang gawaing kaligtasan sa liturhiya, nararanasan natin ang kaligtasang ito – kung paanong nang si Kristo’y namatay, ipinasa niya ang Espiritu sa kanyang Simbahan, tayong nagdiriwang nito ay nilulukuban din ng kanyang Espiritu.

Mula Noon Hanggang Ngayon
Sa kasaysayan ng pagsambang Kristiyano, ang orihinal na kapistahan ay ang Linggo – ang araw ng paglikha at muling pagkabuhay. Sa unang siglo ng pag-iral ng Simbahan, nagkaroon ng taunang pagdiriwang ng misteryong pinagdiriwang tuwing Linggo. At ito nga ang pagdiriwang ng Easter. Kung paanong mahalaga ang bawat Linggo sa bawat Kristiyano, ganito rin ang taunang pagdiriwang na ito. Ang pagdiriwang natin sa kasalukuyan ng Triduong ito ay malaki ang pagkakahawig sa mga sinaunang pagdiriwang. Hinango ang ating Triduo sa ngayon mula sa ginagawa noon pa sa Roma at sa Jerusalem, kung kaya’t dapat nating igalang at panatilihin ang ayos na minana natin. Ngunit gaya ng maraming bagay sa Simbahan, natabunan at halos nakalimutan ang pagdiriwang na ito at napalitan ng mga bagay na hindi singhalaga. Ito ang dapat nating pakaingatang huwag mangyari – bigyan natin ng halaga ang mga dapat pag-ukulan nito. Sa reporma lamang ng ikalawang konsilio ng Vaticano naibalik ang napakagandang pagdiriwang na ito.

Pahalagahan nang Tama
Ito dapat ang pinakamahalagang pagdiriwang para sa lahat ng Kristiyano. Pero madalas, natatabunan ito ng pintakasi sa mga santo, maging ng Pasko o ng mga debosyon, kahit pa sa misteryong pinagdiriwang dito tayo naligtas at hindi dahil sa mga ipinapalit natin dito. Kung kaya’t marapat lamang na tunay itong paghandaan, pagyamanin at ipagdiwang ng buo ng bawat pamayanan. Sa pagdiriwang nito, sapat dapat ang mga lingkod, puno dapat ng awit at matingkad at maganda dapat ang mga tanda na ginagamit sapagkat sa mahusay na pagganap dito nakasalalay ang pagdanas ng pamayanan ng kaligtasang inaalala at isinasa-ngayon natin.

Liturhiya at Debosyon
Nagsisimula ang Triduong ito sa pagdiriwang sa pagtatakipsilim ng paghahapunan ng Panginoon (evening celebration of the Lord’s Supper) at natatapos sa panalangin sa gabi ng Linggo ng Pagkabuhay. Ipinagdiriwang natin ito sa pamamagitan ng liturhiya – ang pagdiriwang sa pagtatakipsilim ng paghahapunan ng Panginoon, pagdiriwang ng pagpapakasakit ng Panginoon (celebration of the Lord’s Passion) at ng magdamagang pagdiriwang ng pasko ng pagkabuhay (Easter Vigil) na iisang pagdiriwang lang, at ng panalangin ng Kristiyano sa maghapon (Liturgy of the Hours); at sa pamamagitan ng mga debosyon – mga prusisyon, Daan ng Krus, at iba pang gawain.

1 Pagdiriwang sa 3 Araw
Ang liturhiya ng Triduo na nabanggit ay iisang pagdiriwang lamang. Magsisimula ito sa pagpasok (entrance procession) ng Huwebes ng Gabi at matatapos sa paghayo (dismissal) pagkatapos ng pagdiriwang ng pagkabuhay. Wala ring pagkukrus at pagpasok sa Biyernes Santo at gabi ng Sabado de Gloria. Alam dapat ng mga tao na babalik sila para sa pagpapatuloy. Dapat makita ang kaisahan ng tatlong bahaging ito – kaisahang gawa ng kaisahan din ng kamatayan at muling pagkabuhay.

Pinaghahandaan ang Mahusay na Pagdiriwang
Malaking hamon sa atin na gawing maganda at makahulugan ang pagdiriwang ng mga araw na ito. Para sa layuning ito, mahalaga na magkaroon ng katekesis para sa mga tao para alam nila ang gagawin at makibahagi sila nang mas mahusay. Sa pagpaplano din, tandaan na mas mahalaga ang liturhiya kaysa sa mga prusisyon at debosyon at maging tapat dapat ang mga naghahanda ng pagdiriwang sa nakasaad sa mga librong liturhikal – hindi dapat lumalabas dito ang ating mga gagawin. Mas magiging makahulugan ito kung hindi ito puputulin dahil sa nahahabaan lamang o dahil tinatamad. Tandaan rin na ang liturhiya ay hindi isang palabas at ang mga nakikibahagi dito ay hindi lamang mga tagapanood. Kapag ang pagdiriwang ay napaghandaan, naganap nang may sapat na lingkod, musika at kabanalan nang nakikibahagi ang buong Mistikal na Katawan ni Kristo, tiyak na magagawa ng liturhiya ang pagluluwalhati sa Diyos at pagpapabanal sa tao.

Paglubog ng araw ng Huwebes Santo, pumapasok ang buong Simbahan sa pinakabanal na tatlong araw sa pananampalataya. Ipinagdiriwang sa gabing ito ang Pagdiriwang sa Pagtatakipsilim ng Paghahapunan ng Panginoon (Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper). Sa gabing ito, ginugunita at ginaganap natin ang pagtatatag ng Panginoon ng Eukaristiya, ang iniwan niya sa ating ritwal na pag-alala ng kanyang pag-aalay ng katawan at dugo sa krus. Itinatag din niya ang banal na orden na siyang mamumuno sa pamayanan sa pag-alalang ito. Itong dalawang pagtatatag na ito ay tumuturo naman sa pinakamahalagang punto ng gabing ito: ang utos ng pagmamahal. Ang gagawin na pag-aalay ni Kristo ng kanyang katawan at dugo sa krus sa kinabukasan, ang pag-aalay niya ng kanyang katawan at dugo sa krus sa kinabukasan sa Eukaristiya at pag-aalay na gaganapin at isasabuhay ng banal na orden ay paraan ng pagpapahayag niya ng kanyang pag-ibig – pag-ibig na siya nating dapat tularin.

Mga Paghahanda
Sarado dapat ang Adoration chapel. Wala rin dapat laman, o may takip ang Baptismal Font. Ang mga lumang langis para sa Maysakit at Banal na Krisma ay dapat nang sinunog bilang langis sa lampara sa may Banal na Sakramento. Gagayakan ng bulaklak ang santuaryo ngunit hindi dapat singdami ng sa Sabado de Gloria. Ang mahalaga sa Huwebes Santo, una, ay ang Altar ng Santuaryo sapagkat dito gaganapin ang Eukaristiya.

Pasimula
Magsisimula ang pagdiriwang sa pagpasok, na karaniwan sa Misa. Sa pagpasok na ito, maaaring kasama ang mga taong may gagawin sa pagdiriwang – mga lingkod sa dambana, mga tagabasa, mga huhugasan ang paa, mga tagapagbigay ng komunyon at mga pari. Maaaring magsuot ang mga huhugasan ang paa ng espesyal na gayak na magsasabing sila ang huhugasan ng paa, ngunit hindi ito kailangan. Ang mga pari ay nakasuot ng puti.

Gaganapin ang Pasimula sa karaniwang paraan. Sa pag-awit ng Gloria, patutunugin ang lahat ng batingaw sa simbahan at pagkatapos nito, ang mga ito ay itatabi at di na patutunugin hanggang sa Gloria ng Magdamagang Pagdiriwang ng Pasko ng Muling Pagkabuhay (Easter Vigil). Tradisyon ng Simbahang Romano ang hindi pagtugtog ng organ pagkatapos ng Gloria, at muling pagtugtog nito sa Gloria ng Easter Vigil.

Liturhiya ng Salita
Sa Liturhiya ng Salita, mayroong tatlong pagbasa kasama ang Mabuting Balita. Inuugnay sa unang pagbasa ang hapunang pampaskuwa ng mga Israelita sa Eukaristiya (ang Paschal meal ay paggunita sa kaligtasan mula sa Ehipto). Sa ikalawang pagbasa naman itinuturo ni Apostol San Pablo na ang Eukaristiya ay pamana sa atin ng Panginoon bilang pag-alala sa kanya hanggang sa kanyang pagbabalik. Ang Mabuting Balita ay patungkol sa paghuhugas ng paa na konkretong pagpapakita ng Panginoon ng kanyang utos na magmahal. Maganda kung kakantahin ang Salmong Tugunan. Hindi pa rin maaaring umawit ng Aleluya kung kaya’t ang gagamitin ay mga pamalit dito. Sa Homiliya, ipaliliwanag ng tagapamuno o homilist ang mga misteryong ipinagdiriwang sa gabing ito.

Paghuhugas ng Paa
Pagkatapos ng homiliya ay gaganapin ang paghuhugas ng paa. Gagawin ito nang walang sinasabi ang maghuhugas at huhugasan habang ang pamayanan ay umaawit ng angkop na awitin. Hindi ito panahon para magsariwa ng mga pangako sa ordinasyon ang pari – ginawa ito ng Huwebes Santo ng umaga sa Katedral; hindi rin ito panahon para ituro kung paano isasabuhay ang paglilingkod – ito ay ginawa na dapat sa homiliya. Ang mga salita sa bahaging ito ay makasisira lamang sa kapangyarihan ng mga kilos.

Panalangin ng Bayan
Pagkatapos ng paghuhugas, gaganapin ang Panalangin ng Bayan. Kung may kagustuhan na makapagsalita ang mga hinugasan, maaari silang pagbasahin ng mga pagluhog sa Panalangin ng Bayan. Maaari rin namang basahin ito ng ilang piniling bahagi ng pamayanan.

Paghahanda ng mga Alay
Sa Paghahanda ng mga Alay (Preparation of Gifts), maaaring dalhin ang Langis para sa Maysakit at Banal na Krisma na nakuha mula sa Misa ng Huwebes Santo nang umaga. Tatanggapin ito sa pamamagitan ng rite na nasa pahina . Sa gabing ito, kasama sa tinapay at alak ang mga alay para sa mga mahihirap (gifts for the poor) na gawain sa lahat ng Misa mula pa noong sinaunang Simbahan. Ipinakikita dito ang kaugnayan ng pagdiriwang ng pagsamba sa mga panlipunang tungkulin na kalingain ang kapwa lalo na ang nangangailangan. Maaaring magdala ang mga tao ng mga bagay na maaaring mapakinabangan ng mga mahihirap. Iwasan ang pag-aalay ng bulaklak at kandila, sapagkat ang mga palamuting ito ay dapat nang nakalagay sa altar bago pa magsimula ang pagdiriwang.

Dahil walang Liturhiya ng Eukaristiya sa susunod na araw, doble ang kailangang ostiya para sa gabing ito. Maghahanda dapat ng ipangpapakinabang para sa Biyernes Santo.

Magandang makapakinabang ang mga tao sa parehong tinapay at alak, ngunit huwag itong ipipilit kung sa sobrang daming tao ay magtatagal masyado ang pagdiriwang (pero hindi ibig sabihin, paiiksiin ang pagdiriwang; handa dapat ang mga tao sa mahabang pagmimisa). Kapag ganito ang mangyayari, maghahanda dapat ng maraming kalis at maraming alak. Ang lahat ng magiging dugo ni Kristo ay kailangang ubusin sa pakikinabang. Kung makikinabang sa dugo ni Kristo, maaaring isawsaw ang katawan sa dugo bago isubo o maaaring ibigay ang katawan at painumin sa kalis (ang mga mungkahing ito ay nakadepende kung alam ng mga nagsisimba kung paano ito gagawin, mas madali yaong unang mungkahi kung hindi alam ng mga tao).

Apat na Kilos ng Eukaristiya
Dahil ang pagdiriwang na ito ay paggunita sa pagtatatag ng Eukaristiya, hindi dapat madaliin ang mga mahahalagang kilos ng Eukaristiya – ang pagtanggap, pagpapasalamat, paghahati-hati at pagbibigay (take, give thanks, broke and give). Gamitin ang una o ang ikatlong Panalangin ng Pagpupuri’t Pasasalamat (Eucharistic Prayer) sa halip na pangkaraniwang ginagamit na ikalawa. Dahil sa istruktura ng ikaapat, hindi ito maaaring gamitin sapagkat hindi maaaring palitan ang prepasyo nito.

Walang Paghayo, Mayroong Paglalagak
Ang kakaiba sa pagdiriwang na ito ay hindi pagkakaroon ng paghayo sa katapusan. Ito ay sapagkat ang paghayo ay mangyayari sa katapusan ng pagdiriwang sa Sabado de Gloria (i.e. Easter Vigil). Sa halip ay pagkatapos ng mga patalastas, gaganapin ang paglilipat ng Banal na Sakramento sa Altar of Repose (para sa paksang ito, basahin sa pahina ). Sa ciborium nakalagay ang katawan ni Kristo at hindi sa monstrance. Maaari rin itong lagyan ng belo. Ipuprusisyon ito mula sa altar patungo sa paglalagyan nito hanggang sa Biyernes Santo habang umaawit ng Pange Lingua o ibang angkop na awit. Sa prusisyong ito, nangunguna ang krus, mga kandila at insensaryo at ang Banal na Sakramento na napapayungan ng pallium. Para sa dagdag na pakikibahagi ng mga tao, maaari silang pagdalahin ng kandila na maaaring gawing palamuti sa Altar of Repose. Pagdating sa Altar of Repose, ilalagay ang Banal na Sakramento sa loob, iinsensuhan at aawit ng Tantum Ergo at isasara ito. Hindi dapat nakalabas ang Banal na Sakramento dahil hindi ito Exposition kungdi ito ay Reposition. Maaaring magkaroon ng vigil sa harapan nito ngunit matatapos dapat ito pagdating ng hatinggabi.

Tatanggalin ang lahat ng gayak ng altar, mga bulaklak, kandila at iba pa. Kung hindi pa natatakpan ang krus bago mag-ikalimang Linggo ng Kuwaresma, dapat na itong takpan. Maaari na ring takpan ang mga santo at imahen. Ito ang tanda na tapos na ang pagdiriwang sa gabing ito.

Ang araw ng Biyernes Santo ay para sa paggunita ng pagpapakasakit ng Panginoon, ang kanyang ginawang pag-aalay ng kanyang sarili para sa buong sangkatauhan at ang pagpaparangal sa krus na banal. Sa araw na ito hindi gaganapin ang kahit anong sakramento kahit Misa kung kaya’t ang ating liturhiya sa araw na ito ay walang Liturhiya ng Eukaristiya. Kahit walang Misa, ang liturhiya sa hapon ay bahagi ng Triduo na nagsimula noong gabi ng Huwebes kung kaya’t dapat makibahagi ang pamayanan dito.

Sa umaga, gawain ng Simbahan ang Panalangin sa Umaga (Morning Prayer) ng Panalanging Kristiyano sa Maghapon (Liturgy of the Hours). Malinaw na mas mataas ang gawaing ito sa iba pang panalangin i.e. Daan ng Krus kung kaya’t hindi dapat ito isantabi ng parokya. Ito ang tamang araw para gawin ang Daan ng Krus at hindi habang ginagawa ang Bisita Iglesia. Ang Daan ng Krus ay hindi dapat isabay sa liturhiya sa hapon. Maganda na gawin ito pagkatapos ng Panalangin sa Umaga.

Dapat bigyan ng tamang pagpapahalaga ang Panalangin sa Umaga at Pagdiriwang ng Pagpapakasakit ng Panginoon na pawang Liturhiya kaysa sa gawain debosyonal sa simbahan gaya ng Siete Palabras at Daan ng Krus. Hindi ibig sabihin ay tatanggalin ang Siete Palabras at Daan ng Krus, bagkus dapat itong mga gawaing ito ay tumuturo pabalik sa liturhiya sa araw na ito. Ang mga debosyong ito ay mga dagdag lamang sa panalangin ng Simbahan (i.e. Liturhiya).

Pangkalahatang Pakiramdam
Mahalaga sa pagdiriwang na ito ang pangkalahatang pakiramdam (ambiance) kung kaya’t maraming pagkakataon para sa tahimik na panalangin, walang gayak ang santuaryo, walang mga bulaklak, kandila at mantel ang altar, walang paglalahad ng kamay ang pari, at wala ring mga pagbati.

Pagpapatirapa
Magsisimula ang pagdiriwang sa tahimik na pagbalik sa santuaryo ng pari. Walang awit, walang maringal na prusisyon, ni hindi tatayo ang mga tao. Ang mga lingkod ay nakapuwesto na. Tahimik na lalakad ang paring tagapamuno mula sa sakristia papunta sa harapan ng dambana at doon sa harap nito ay dadapa ito. Lahat ng mga tao ay magsisiluhod at tahimik na mananalangin.

Liturhiya ng Salita
Matapos nito, tatayo ang tagapamuno at ang lahat ng natitipon. Hindi hahalikan ang altar. Magtutungo ang pari sa kanyang upuan at sasabihin ang panalangin. Hindi niya ilalahad ang kanyang kamay, ni hindi siya magsasabi ng ‘Manalangin tayo.’ Matapos nito, ipahahayag ang Salita ng Diyos. Sa unang pagbasa, maririnig natin ang isa sa mga awit ng nagdurusang lingkod ng Panginoon na tumuturo kay Kristo. Ayon sa ikalawang pagbasa, ginanap ni Kristo ang kanyang pagkapari sa kanyang kamatayan, inalay niya ang kanyang sarili gaya ng pag-aalay ng kordero, para ipagkasundo ang Diyos at sangkatauhan at iligtas ang sangkatauhan mula sa kasalanan. Kung maaari ay aawitin ang Salmong Tugunan at dahil walang pagpaparangal sa Mabuting Balita, maaaring awitin ang koro ng Ubi Caritas o salin nito. Walang pagbati sa simula ng Mabuting Balita, wala ring pagkukrus sa aklat at sa noo. Maaaring ipamahagi ang pagpapahayag ng Mabuting Balita sa ilang tao habang pari ang gumaganap sa bahagi ni Kristo, ang bahagi ng taumbayan (crowd) ay maaaring ibigay sa mga tao habang pinamumunuan ng mga lingkod sa pag-awit (choir). Hangga’t maaari ay angkop ang boses ng gaganap sa tauhan sa pagbasa. Maaari ring gawing parang drama sa radio ang pagpapahayag ng pagpapakasakit at haluan ng awit ngunit hindi maaaring palitan ang pagpapahayag ng pag-awit ng Pasyon o ng isang pagtatanghal ng senakulo. Hindi palabas ang liturhiya. Ingatang huwag maging katawa-tawa ang gagawing pagpapahayag. Kapag mahusay ang pagganap sa bahaging ito, maaantig ang puso ng mga natitipon. Maaaring paupuin ang mga tao ngunit kailangan pa rin nilang tumayo at lumuhod – iminumungkahi na paupuin sa simula, patayuin kapag ipinapasan na kay Kristo ang krus, paluhurin sa punto ng kamatayan at patayuin hanggang katapusan.

Panalanging Pagkahalatan
Pagkatapos ng pagpapahayag, hindi hahalikan ang Aklat. Sabi sa Sakramentaryo, maaaring magbigay ng maikling homiliya o paliwanag pagkatapos. Pagkatapos nito, gaganapin ang Panalanging Pangkalahatan. Ang ginawang pag-aalay ng buhay ni Kristo ay para sa kapakanan ng lahat kung kaya’t ipinapanalangin sa sampung panalangin ang lahat – ang Simbahan, ang Papa, ang Obispo, Kaparian at lahat ng kaanib ng Simbahan, ang mga Inihahanda sa Binyag, ang pagkakaisa ng lahat ng Kristiyano, ang mga Hudyo, ang mga hindi Kristiyano, ang mga hindi naniniwala sa Diyos, ang mga umuugit sa pamahalaan at ang mga may tanging pangangailangan. Ang anyo ng Panalanging Pangkalahatan sa Biyernes Santo ay ang anyo na likas sa Simbahang Romano noong sinauna (ang anyo na ginagamit natin sa araw-araw ay nagmula sa Eastern Rite). Tatayo ang mga tao sa paanyayang manalangin at luluhod para manalangin at tatayong muli kapag pinahahayag ng tagapamuno ang panalangin. Maaari rin namang tumayo o lumuhod na lang ang lahat sa buong Panalanging Pangkalahatan. Pero kung luluhod, tandaan na pagkatapos nito ay luluhod na naman ang tao sa Pagpaparangal sa Krus na Banal.

Pagpaparangal sa Krus na Banal
Sa Pagpaparangal sa Krus na Banal, isang krus lamang ang gagamitin. Lalambungan ito ng pulang tela; sa paghahanda, dapat tandaan na unang tatanggalan ng takip ang ulunan, tapos ang kanang braso at tatanggalin sa huli. Mayroong dalawang paraan ng pagtatanghal sa krus at sa parehong paraan ipuprusisyon ang krus na may lambong patungo sa altar kasama ang dalawang lingkod na may dalang kandila. Sa unang paraan, dadalhin ito patungong altar kung saan tatanggapin ito ng tagapamuno sa gawi ng dambana at gagawin ang mga pagtatanghal sa lugar na ito. Sa ikalawang paraan, bababa ang tagapamuno at siya ang magpuprusisyon nito mula sa pintuan ng simbahan at gagawin ang pagtatanggal ng lambong at pagtatanghal sa pintuan, sa gitna ng simbahan at sa may gawi ng dambana. Tatanggalin ang lambong sa ulunan at itataas niya ito habang inaawit ang paanyaya at tutugon ang mga tao, pagkatapos, tatanggalin ang lambong sa kanang bahagi, muling itataas ito habang inaawit ang paanyaya at tutugon ang mga tao at sa pangatlo, tatanggalin ang buong lambong at itataas muli ang krus at gagawin ang sagutan. Matapos nito, ilalagay ang krus sa santuaryo sa pagitan ng dalawang kandila. Luluhod ang pari, mga lingkod at ang sambayanan sa harap ng krus at isa-isang pararangalan ito sa pamamagitan ng nakagawian i.e. paghalik. Maaari rin naman, kung masyadong marami ang mga tao at magtatagal (at dahil isa lang ang krus na maaaring gamitin), ay sabay-sabay na magparangal ang lahat sa pamamagitan ng pagluhod at tahimik na manalangin at saka na lamang pahalikan ang krus matapos ang pagdiriwang. Habang pinaparangalan ng krus na banal ay maaaring awitin ang mga Hinanakit (Reproaches) o ibang angkop na awitin.

Pakikinabang
Pagkatapos ng Pagpaparangal, gaganapin ang Komunyon, ang pakikinabang natin sa nasirang katawan ni Kristo. Lalagyan ng mantel at corporal ang altar. Tahimik na maghihintay ang lahat habang kinukuha ng tagapamuno/diakono/lingkod sa pakikinabang ang Banal na Sakramento. Maaaring maupo at tahimik na manalangin ang lahat. Ipapatong ang mga ciborium sa altar at mananalangin ang lahat ng Panalangin ng Panginoon. Pagkatapos nito, walang Panalangin para sa Kapayapaan at walang Kordero ng Diyos. Tahimik na magdadasal ang pari at pagkatapos, gaganapin ang pakikinabang sa karaniwang paraan. Pagkatapos nito, ang mga matitira ay ibabalik sa Altar of Repose o sa Tabernakulo, ngunit maaari rin na ubusin na lamang ito at mag-iwan na lang para sa mga maysakit.

Walang Paghayo
Pagkatapos ng Panalangin Pagkapakinabang, gaganapin ang pagpapanalangin sa sambayanan at wala muling paghayo. Maaaring iwan ang krus para sa patuloy na pagpapahalik at maaari na ring magsimula ang prusisyon ng Santo Entierro. Pagkatapos ng prusisyon ng Santo Entierro, maaaring ilagay ang imahen sa simbahan para sa mga tao.

Pagpaparangal sa Ilaw

Magsisimula ang Magdamagang Pagdiriwang ng Pasko ng Pagkabuhay (Easter Vigil) sa Pagpaparangal sa Ilaw (Service of Light). Gagawin ito sa isang lugar sa labas ng simbahan, hangga’t maaari sa lugar na kung saan makakapagprusisyon nang may bahagyang kahabaan ang mga tao. Sisindihan ang isang apoy at mula sa apoy nito ay sisindihan ang Cirio Paschale (Paschal Candle). Sa paghahanda ng apoy na ito, tandaan na hindi ito palabas kung kaya’t hindi kailangang gumamit ng pyrotechnics o ng karaniwang ginagamit na ‘bulalakaw.’ Naibabaling kasi sa mga ito ang pansin ng lahat sa halip na sa Cirio Paschale na sa panahon ng Pasko ng Pagkabuhay ay tanda ng Panginoong Muling Nabuhay. Hindi rin kailangang malaki ang apoy dahil ipangsisindi nga ito ng kandila. Babasbasan ng tagapamuno ang apoy.

Ihahanda ng tagapamuno ang Kandila ng Pagkabuhay. Sa paglalagay ng mga tanda sa Kandila, gumamit ng espesyal na stylus – tandaan na ang ginagamit sa liturhiya ay hindi dapat basta-basta. Maaaring bago gawin ito ng pari ay magbigay ng katekesis ang commentator tungkol sa mga tandang ito o kahit bago pa ang pagdiriwang (kahit bago pa ang Triduo). Pagkatapos ihanda, ito ay sisindihan at iinsensuhan (ang uling ay sisindihan sa parehong apoy). Ang apoy ay hahayaan hanggang sa ito ay maubos (hindi maaaring sadyang patayin sapagkat ito’y binasbasan). Itataas ng diakono o ng tagapamuno ang Kandila habang sinasabi ang nakasaad sa Aklat ng Pagmimisa at tutugon naman ang tao. Lalakad ang lahat, pinangungunahan ng Cirio Paschale na dala ng diakono o ng tagapamuno. Pagsapit sa pintuan ng simbahan, itataas muli ng diakono o tagapamuno ang Kandila habang sinasabi ang nakasaad sa Aklat na tutugunan naman ng mga tao. Sisindihan ng lahat ang kani-kanilang kandila mula sa apoy ng Kandila ng Pagkabuhay. Magsisipasok ang lahat sa simbahan. Lalakad ang diakono o tagapamuno patungo sa dambana. Dito, itataas muli ang Kandila at magsasagutan. Sa tradisyon ng Simbahang Romano, sa ikatlong paanyayang ito sinisindihan ang lahat ng ilaw ng simbahan. Pero para sa mga Pilipino nakagawian nang patay ang ilaw hanggang Gloria, sapagkat ayon sa paliwanag, hindi pa magliliwanag habang Lumang Tipan pa ang binabasa – wala pa si Kristo. Ang Kandila ng Pagkabuhay ang tanda ni Kristong muling nabuhay.

Ilalagay ang Kandilang ito malapit sa Ambo, at ang liwanag nitong kandilang ito ang magsisilbing ilaw para pagnilayan ang Salita ng Diyos. Maaaring insensuhan ang Kandila. Sa buong panahon ng Pagkabuhay, itong kandilang ito lamang ang tatabi sa Hapag ng Salita (walang mga lingkod na may dalang kadelaryo). Ipahahayag ang Exultet. Kapag may diakono, hihingi siya ng pagbabasbas mula sa tagapamuno. Maaaring hindi diakono ang umawit ng Exultet, maaaring pari o maaaring cantor, na hindi na kailangan ng pagbabasbas. Kapag cantor ang aawit, hindi niya babanggitin ang mga bahagi na hindi para sa kanya. Maaaring insensuhan ang Aklat ng Exultet bago ang pagpapahayag. Mananatiling nakatayo ang lahat habang hawak ang kanilang kandilang may sindi. Matapos ang Exultet, papatayin ng lahat ang kanilang dalang kandila at magsisiupo.

Liturhiya ng Salita

Ang Liturhiya ng Salita sa gabing ito ay alaala ng sinaunang gawain na magninilay sa Salita ng Diyos hangga’t kaya ng oras. Mayroong siyam na pagbasa na nagbabaliktanaw sa kasaysayan ng kaligtasan, una kaligtasan para sa bayan ng Israel, hanggang sa para sa Simbahan, at para sa bawat Kristiyano – sa pamamagitan ng tinanggap (at tatatanggaping binyag). Maaaring paiksiin ang Liturhiya ng Salita ngunit hindi dapat ito paiksin dahil lamang sa katamaran o sa pagmamadali. Ang pagbabago o pagpapaiksi dito ay maka-aapekto sa pagdanas ng anamnesis ng mga tao.

Sa unang pagbasa, matutunghayan ang kuwento ng paglikha, ang unang yugto ng kaligtasan. Sa ikalawang pagbasa, maririnig ang kuwento ng pag-aalay ni Abraham ng kanyang anak na si Isaac – kuwentong kahalintulad ng pag-aalay ng Anak ng Diyos ng kanyang sarili para sa sangkatauhan. Sa ikatlong pagbasa, hahawiin ng Diyos ang dagat para sa bayang Israel, nang makatawid sila at maligtas mula sa kamay ng mga Ehipto. Sa ikaapat na pagbasa, inangkin ng Diyos na parang asawa ang bayang hinirang niya at pinangakuang iibigin nang walang hanggan. Sa ikalimang pagbasa, ibinibigay ng Diyos ang kanyang pagpapala, at inaanyahahan ang mga nauuhaw at nagugutom na tanggapin ito mula sa kanya. Sa ika-anim na pagbasa, ipinagkakaloob ng Diyos ang kanyang Karunungan, ang Salitang nagbibigay ng buhay na walang hanggan. Sa ikapitong pagbasa, ipinangangako ng Panginoon ang bagong buhay sa kanyang bayan na kanyang pagpapanibaguhin at lilinisin at pagkakalooban ng bagong puso at ng Espiritu upang mamuhay para sa kanya.

Sa pagbasa, maaaring magpakita ng angkop na larawan (hindi maaaring gumagalaw dahil maaagaw ang pansin sa pagpapahayag) sa projector para mas maintindihan ng tao ang binabasa.

Sa bawat pagbasa, may kasunod na Salmong Tugunan at panalangin. Mas gaganda ang pagdiriwang kung ang mga Salmong ito ay aawitin. Pareho ang mga pagbasa at salmo taun-taon kung kaya’t maganda kung makakapangalap ng piyesa ang mga parokya para dito para may magamit kada taon. Ang mga ihahaliling awit ay dapat halaw sa Salmo na nasa Aklat ng Pagbasa.

Aawit ng Gloria matapos ang panalangin sa ikapitong pagbasa. Sa nakagawian sa Pilipinas, sa puntong ito sisindihan ang lahat ng ilaw sa simbahan at gagayakan ang simbahan. Maaaring ipatong ang Aklat ng Mabuting Balita sa altar. Maaari ring insensuhan ang altar. Maaari rin na ikarakol (kung karaniwang ginagawa) ang imahe ng Pagkabuhay. Iwasan ang mga pagsasadula ng pagkabuhay at mga palabas na parang sa COD na kung saan ang imahen ay lalabas sa isang kuweba na may usok at mga tunog. Hindi sa isang punto sa pagdiriwang nabuhay muli si Kristo at kung may punto man, ito ay nang sindihan ang Kandila ng Pagkabuhay.

Ang Panalanging Pambungad ay ipahahayag ng tagapamuno matapos ang Gloria.

Sa ikawalong pagbasa na sulat ni San Pablo sa mga taga-Roma, nararanasan ng Kristiyano ang kaligtasan sa binyag na kung saan namatay siya sa kasalanan at nabuhay muli kasama ni Kristo. Matapos ang pagbasa, aawitin ang Salmo na ang tugon ay Aleluya. Maaaring simulan ito ng tagapamuno gaya ng nakagawian sa Simbahang Romano. Ito ang tumatayong pagpaparangal sa Mabuting Balita. Magsisitayo na ang lahat at maaari nang iprusisyon ang Aklat ng Mabuting Balita. Ang Mabuting Balita ay patungkol sa di pagkakita ng mga babae sa bangkay ni Hesus sa bukas na libingan. Matapos nito, magbibigay ng homiliya.

Liturhiya ng Binyag

Napakahalaga ng Binyag sa pagdiriwang na ito dahil dito ipinakikita ang isang bagong buhay na hatid ng muling pagkabuhay ng Panginoon. Maaaring binyagan ang mga sanggol sa gabing ito, ngunit higit na makahulugan ang pagbibinyag sa mga may isip na. Ang mga catechumens ay hinubog sa loob ng 40 araw simula noong Miyerkules ng Abo. Nakiisa sila sa paghihirap, kamatayan at muling pagkabuhay ng Panginoon sa Binyag. Sa gabing ito, tanda ng pakikiisa kay Kristo, tatlong sakramento ang matatanggap ng mga binyagang nasa sapat ng gulang: ang binyag, kumpil at unang pakikinabang.

Ang lugar ng Binyagan o Baptismal Font ay dapat ihanda. Sa bawat simbahan ng parokya, napakahalaga ng lugar ng binyagan o baptismal font dahil ito ang sinapupunan ng Simbahan na kung saan ipinapanganak ang mga bagong miyembro nito. Ito ay hindi dapat isang palanggana na gawa sa metal o plastic, dapat ito ay may dignidad at kagandahan na nararapat sa kahulugan at kahalagahan ng Sakramento. Kung ang baptismal font ay hindi pa nababasbasan, ang gabi ito ay tamang oras upang gawin ang pagbabasbas.

Ang tubig pambinyag ay babasbasan sa gabing ito na siya namang gagamitin sa pagbibinyag di lamang sa gabing ito kundi sa buong Pasko ng Pagkabuhay. Iba ito sa Holy Water na pambabasbas ng mga imahen, bahay, at iba pa. Ito ay tubig na para lamang sa Binyag. May bibinyagan man o wala, dapat magkaroon ng pagbabasbas ng tubig ng binyag. Kung walang baptismal font na babasbasan at bibinyagan, ang pagbabasbas ng tubig ay gagawin kaagad.

Ang pagsamo sa mga Santo ay aawitin kung may bibinyagan. Hindi maaring magdagdag ng mga banal na tao na hindi pang idinedeklarang Santo ng Roma.

Bilang tanda ng ating pakikiisa sa misteryo ng Paskuwa ng Panginoon na ating natanggap noong tayo ay bininyagan, sinasariwa natin ang pangako natin sa Binyag: ang pagtalikod sa kasalanan at kasamaan at ang pagpapahayag ng pananampalataya sa Banal na Santatlo. Ang pagwiwisik ng tubig ng binyag ay gagawin din paalala ng ating binyag.

Sa panalangin ng bayan, ipapanalangin ang Simbahan, kaligtasan ng mundo, mga may tanging pangangailangan, ang pamayanan at ang mga bagong binyagan. Kasama dapat sa buong Panahon ng Pasko ng Pagkabuhay ang luhog para sa mga bagong binyagan.

Ang Pagdiriwang ng Eukaristiya

Ang Eukaristiya ay ang ritwal na pag-alala sa pagpapakasakit at muling pagkabuhay ni Kristo kung saan tayo naligtas, samakatuwid, ang laman ng buong Triduo. Ang pagdiriwang nito ay hindi dapat madaliin at dapat mapatingkad. Maganda rin na magkaroon ng paliwanag sa mga bahagi nito para sa bagong binyagan.

Maaring anyayahan ang mga bagong binyagan na ihandog ang tinapay at alak sa paghahandog ng mga alay.

Kung gagamitin man ang Unang Panalangin ng Papuri at Pasasalamat, may natatanging panalangin na dapat maisama para sa gabing ito.

Sa paghahati ng tinapay at sa paganyaya sa pakikinabang, maaring banggitin ng paring tagapamuno pagkatapos ng “Ito ang Kordero ng Diyos…” ang ilang pananalita ng pagpapaliwanag para sa mga bagong binyagan, na tatanggap ng unang pakikinabang, ang kahalagahan ng pagtanggap sa Katawan ni Kristo.

Ang natatanging pagbabasbas para sa pagidiriwang na ito ay dapat gamitin upang maging lakas ng mga dumalo para isabuhay ang diwa ng misteryo ng Paskuwa sa mundong kanilang ginagalawan.

Para mabigyan nang karapatdapat na pagpapahalaga ang Magdamagang Pagdiriwang na ito (dahil madalas, sapaw ang Salubong), maaaring idugtong sa hulihan nito ang Salubong, na isa lamang debosyon. Sa ganitong paraan, hindi rin magiging masyadong mabigat para sa mga lingkod sa parokya ang Pasko ng Pagkabuhay.

Palm Sunday

HISTORY
Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week. Since the first centuries of Christianity, the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem before his passion has been celebrated with particular solemnity. Depending on the branches used, the feast has been called Palm Sunday (from date palms), Willow Sunday (from pussy-willows, in Europe), or Flower Sunday (from early spring flowers, around Constantinople).
The blessed branches are carried home as a sacramental, as a visible symbol of Christ’s presence. They may be put over the main door, entwined on the crucifix or used to decorate an icon, as a “sign of salvation” and a “pledge of protection and blessing” during the coming year. On the eve of Ash Wednesday of the following year, they may be brought to church to be burned into the ashes that would be used the next day.
Outstanding homilies were delivered on this feast by the Church Fathers, the oldest being that of St. Methodius of Olympus (d.ca.311); among the most eloquent being those of St. Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444), St. Proclus of Constantinople (d. 447) and St. Sophronius of Jerusalem (d. 638).

PROCESSION
At a scheduled time, the congregation assembles in a secondary church or chapel or in some other suitable place distinct from the church to which the procession will move. The faithful carry palm branches and sing the antiphon “Hosanna to the Son of David, the King of Israel. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.” The priest and ministers, in red vestments for Mass, join the people in the antiphon. Then the priest gives an appropriate greeting and says a prayer, such as: “Almighty God, we pray you bless these branches and make them holy. Today we joyfully acclaim Jesus our Messiah and King. May we reach one day the happiness of the new and everlasting Jerusalem by faithfully following him who lives and reigns for ever and ever.” The priest sprinkles the branches with holy water in silence. Then the account of the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem is proclaimed from one of the four gospels. After the gospel, a brief homily may be given. Before the procession begins, the celebrant or other suitable minister may address the people in words such as: “Let us go forth in peace, praising Jesus our Messiah, as did the crowds who welcomed him to Jerusalem.” The procession then begins. If incense is used, the thurifer goes first with a lighted censer, followed by the cross-bearer (with the cross suitably decorated) between two ministers with lighted candles, then the priest with ministers, and finally the congregation carrying branches. During the procession, an appropriate hymn is sung.

SOLEMN ENTRANCE
If the procession cannot be held outside the church, the commemoration of the Lord’s entrance may be celebrated before the principal Mass with the solemn entrance, which takes place within the church.
The faithful, holding the branches, assemble either in front of the church door or inside the church. The priest and ministers, with a representative group of the faithful, go to a suitable place in the church outside the sanctuary, so that most of the people will be able to see the rite.
While the priest goes to the appointed place, the antiphon Hosanna or other suitable song is sung. Then the blessing of branches and proclamation of the gospel about the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem take place, as above. After the gospel, the priest, with the ministers and the group of the faithful, moves solemnly through the church to the sanctuary, while the responsory The Children of Jerusalem or other appropriate song is sung.
When the priest comes to the altar he venerates it, goes to his chair, and immediately begins the opening prayer of the Mass, which then continues in the usual way.
The passion is usually read as a narration and dialogue, with several readers. The part of Jesus is reserved for the priest. At the words announcing the death of Jesus, all kneel and pause a moment.

FREQUENT MISCONCEPTIONS
Palms may be blessed even on the evening preceding Palm Sunday. Sundays and solemnities begin on the preceding evening (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar, 3) therefore whatever is done on Sunday itself should also be done on the Saturday evening celebration of the Sunday Mass. Following the logic of those who claim it is unliturgical to bless palms on Saturday evening, we should also refrain from using liturgy for Sunday on Saturday evening. Saturday evening Masses are NOT anticipated Masses (which in itself is ridiculous to have) but Sunday Masses already.

Lent: 40-Day Preparation for Easter

To understand the Season of Lent and to celebrate it more meaningfully, we must first look at the event that follows it - the Easter Triduum.

The Easter Triduum celebrates the Paschal Mystery (Jesus Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection), which is at the heart of the Christian Faith. The Easter Triduum is the most important and solemn of all celebrations and is the summit of our Liturgical Year.

Lent is a season of preparation and repentance. For catechumens, Lent provides the time for final preparation before baptism at Easter. For the baptized, it is a time for recalling the promises of our baptism, realizing how we have failed to live up to them sometimes, and being led to repentance for these faults. Thus, Lent is a time of spiritual purification, conversion, and preparation to worthily celebrate the salvation that Christ won for all.

Lent starts with Ash Wednesday and ends on the afternoon of Holy Thursday. The forty days of Lent are reminiscent of certain events in our Faith: the 40-day great flood during Noah’s time, the 40-year journey of the Israelites in the desert and Jesus’ 40-day fast in the desert. We begin the season by putting crosses made of ashes on our foreheads as a reminder of our baptism (cross) and our repentance for failing in our promises (ashes). This sign of penance signifies the human condition of the sinner (guilt before the Lord and inner conversion expressed exteriorly). This sign also marks the beginning of the way of conversion (developed through the sacrament of penance).

During these forty days, catechumens prepare for their baptism with intense prayer, catechism, and participation in the rites of the Lenten Liturgy by which they are gradually initiated into the Church as the Christian community prays for them.

Be More Attentive to God’s Word

The readings for the season of Lent have been carefully chosen to prepare the faithful for Easter. We are therefore encouraged to have greater attentiveness to the Word of God. Sunday homilies are good opportunities for catechesis on the Paschal Mystery and the sacraments. As much as possible, the texts of the Lectionary are carefully explained, especially the diverse aspects of baptism and the other sacraments in connection with the mercy of God. The faithful should attend weekday Mass. If Mass attendance is not possible, we are encouraged to do the readings, privately or with our families.

Be Reconciled

Penance is defined as the detestation of sin as an offense against God. The virtue and practice of penance is a necessary part of the preparation for Easter. According to law and tradition, the faithful should approach the sacrament of Reconciliation during this season so that with purified hearts, we may participate in the Paschal Mystery. Pastors should devote themselves to the ministry of reconciliation and provide sufficient time for the faithful to avail of this sacrament.

Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving are the tripod of Christian spirituality. All Christian faithful are bound to do penance by virtue of divine law. Penitential days are prescribed in which the Christian faithful pray, exercise works of piety and charity, and deny ourselves by fulfilling our responsibilities more faithfully, especially by observing fasting and abstinence (CIC 1249). All Fridays throughout the year are penitential days throughout the universal Church (CIC 1250).

Proclaim a Fast

Fasting is eating only one full meal for the entire day and just smaller meals or snacks to sustain physical activity. It does not prohibit taking food in the morning and evening, observing local custom (Poenitemini III, 1-2). We fast so we can share, not for aesthetic or superficial purposes. Fasting clears the mind to make it more focused on Christ. We share the food or money saved from voluntary fasting with those who are forced to fast because of poverty. Fasting is obligatory for those who have reached the age of majority (18) until the beginning of their sixtieth year (midnight of 59th birthday and the next day) (CIC 1252).

Fasting is also reflected in the liturgical environment during Lent. We fast from the usual festiveness of Sunday. The altar is not decorated with flowers (fasting of the eyes) and musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to singing (fasting of the ears). We also omit the alleluia in all celebrations even in solemnities and feasts. The chants to be sung in the celebrations, especially in the Eucharist, and devotional exercises should be in harmony with the spirit of the season and the liturgical texts.

Abstinence

Abstinence from meat is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities (CIC 1251), Ash Wednesday and Friday of the Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ (CIC 1251). Abstinence forbids the use of meat but not of eggs, the products of milk or condiments of animal fat. Abstinence is a must for all persons who have completed their fourteenth year (CIC 1252).

Pray More

During this season, we are encouraged to pray more. Besides attending weekday Mass and reflecting on the Word of God, we are encouraged to do devotional exercises that are in harmony with the Lenten season such as the Way of the Cross and the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows. Lenten observance should witness to and foster the life of the local Church.

Give More

This season challenges us to do Christian charity through almsgiving. We sacrifice and deny ourselves food and certain luxuries so we can give more to those in need. In Isaiah 58, 5ff, the Lord says that the fasting that he is looking for is ‘releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke, setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke, sharing bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless, clothing the naked, and not turning the back on one’s own.’ Almsgiving should not just be giving from our excess or surplus. Real charity is giving even if it hurts. And almsgiving is not simply giving for the sake of giving, but giving because of love and the desire for the development of the recipient.

Come Back to Life

In conclusion, the word Lent means “spring,” the change from the deadness of cold winter to the warm rays of summer. It is a return to life. Our Lent is also our transition from sin and death to life – the life that Christ gained for us through his passion and death and triumphant resurrection. With fasting, prayer and abstinence, we renew ourselves and turn back to God so that we may fully celebrate the joy of Christ’s redemption on Easter Sunday.

Noon ang Apatnapung araw ng paghahanda para sa Pasko ng Pagkabuhay o tinatawag nating Kuwaresma ay panahon para sa pampublikong pagsisi at pagbabago ng mga makasalanan, lalu na iyong mga mabibigat ang naging kasalanan. Ang pagsisising ito ay ipinapakita sa pamamagitan ng pagsusuot ng damit na gawa sa sako at paglalagay ng abo. Hindi nagtagal at nahinto ang lantarang pagsising ito, subalit nagpatuloy ang paglalagay ng abo bilang tanda ng pagsisi at pagbabago. Hanggang sa kasalukuyan tuluy-tuloy pa rin ang paglalagay ng abo sa noo ng mga nananampalataya sa unang araw ng Kwaresma.

Para saan ang abo? Ano ang inaasahan sa mga pinapahiran nito? Sa loob ng pagdiriwang ng misa inilalagay ang abo pagkatapos ng homily. Dalawa ang maaring pagpiliian kung ano ang sasambitin habang inilalagay ang abo. Una, “Magbagong-buhay ka at sa Mabuting Balita sumampalataya.” Ikalawa, “Alalahanin mong abo ang iyong pinanggalingan at abo rin sa wakas ang iyong babalikan.” Ipinapahayag ng una ang hangarin ng Apatnapung araw na paghahanda – pagbabago ng buhay mula sa kasalanan tungo sa kabanalan at ang patuloy na paglago sa malalim na pagtanggap at pagsasabuhay sa Mabuting Balita. Ipinapahayag naman ng ikalawa ang tunay na kalagayan ng tao – may hangganan at marupok ang buhay, at tanging sa Diyos lamang makakatagpo ng kasiguruhan at buhay na walang hanggan. Samakatuwid, ipinapaalala ng abo na panandalian at may katapusan ang buhay dito sa lupa kaya’t di dapat sayangin sa kadiliman ng kasalanan, bagkus ituwid sa pamamagitan ng pagbabalik loob sa Diyos.

Seminar on Lenten Music Held

Sr. Cora Israel FMIJ, newest member of the DMLA Pastoral Team, gave a very informative seminar on Liturgical Music for Lent last February 3 at the Diocesan Center beside the Cathedral. The said event was well-attended, having more than a hundred participants from all over the Diocese.

Sr. Cora began by setting the premises of liturgical music as a lot of music ministries, choirs and organists have wrong notions of their role in the liturgy. She stressed that choirs are to lead the participation of the people and not perform and that the people’s participation should be given priority than more ornate forms of singing. She then discussed the kind of music that suits Lenten liturgy. She even gave out some of her compositions for the Gospel Acclamation for Lent.

Represented are thirty-five parishes with the Vicariate of Saint Joseph as having perfect attendance among the parishes. The Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help along 13th Avenue sent the most representatives. Nine parishes, however, did not send representatives.

This seminar was made by the DMLA in light of its mission-vision of giving needed liturgical instruction for better liturgical celebrations.

Franciscan Sister Joins DMLA-PT

Sr. Cora Israel, a religious of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Infant Jesus (FMIJ), is the newest member of the Pastoral Team of the Diocesan Ministry for Liturgical Affairs.

Sr. Cora is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music and she has just acquired her Masteral Degree in Liturgy from the Graduate School of Liturgy of San Beda College. Her masteral thesis, entitled “The Mystagogical Function of Music in the Liturgy” shows her area of expertise.

Sr. Cora’s first assignment in the DMLA is the Seminar on Liturgical Music for Lent and collaboration for the drafting of the Diocesan Guidelines for Liturgical Music.

DMLA now has one doctor, one master, four candidates for master’s degree and an indefatigable team of the santatlo working together for the worship life of the Diocese.

Rite of Imposition of Ashes Outside Mass

Those who receive the ashes ought to listen to God’s Word before getting the ashes. This may be done by a priest or a lay presider. This rite is the Liturgy of the Word.

Introduction to the Celebration

Today/tonight, we start the discipline of Lent – we start our journey as a community with Jesus Christ, to his Passion, Death and Resurrection – the mystery of our salvation.This season calls us to prayer, fasting and almsgiving, to be more attentive to the Word of God, to spiritual renewal and penance.Today we will be putting ashes on our foreheads,as a sign of our commitment to recall our baptism and how much we have failed in our baptismal vows, and as a sign of our desire to change our ways and turn to God.

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

Liturgy Preparation Aid: Lent

Given that Lent is a season of preparation for Easter, a certain difference should be seen, heard and felt in the church. We are setting aside the usual festivity of decorations, color and music so that we could focus on preparing ourselves through intensifying prayer, meditating on the Word of God and fasting to clear our minds. Moreover, we should emphasize not just the personal but also communal aspect of penance during Lent.

Liturgical Environment

The sanctuary should not be decorated with flowers. As much as possible, the sanctuary should be left as it is so that we can focus on the tables of the Word and the Eucharist as opposed to having other things to look at. The point is to remove what could distract us. We should also avoid decorating the niches for images/statues with flowers.

Floral decorations, however, may be placed in the sanctuary during the Solemnities of St. Joseph (March 19) and the Annunciation (March 25) and on the Fourth Sunday of Lent.

Before the Fifth Sunday of Lent, the parish may opt to cover images and the cross with violet or black cloth. If the cross is to be covered, the processional cross may serve as the altar cross.

Liturgical Color

Violet is used for the Season of Lent. Lenten Violet is different from that used in Advent. Lenten Violet is more reddish than bluish while that of Advent looks bluish. Violet accents may be used to decorate the church but the decoration must be arranged in such a way that they do not distract from the purpose of the season.

White is used in Solemnities and Feasts within Lent, namely, the Chair of Peter (feast), St. Joseph (solemnity) and the Annunciation (solemnity).

Pastoral Notes

To highlight the communal and penitential aspect of the season, parishes may opt to kneel during the Act of Penitence and the first form (Confiteor + Kyrie) may always be used. Another option would be to remind the faithful of their baptism using the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water (instead of the Act of Penitence) but there must be catechism whenever this is used as the Sprinkling of Holy Water acquired other meanings in the course of time. It is also recommended that any of the two Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation be used. They may be found towards the last part of the Sacramentary.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. In the readings, we are called not just as individuals but as a community to return to God with fasting, mourning and weeping, with sacrifice (Reading I) and reconciling with God now (Reading II) for we have sinned and he is merciful (Responsorial Psalm). In the Gospel, Jesus speaks to us on how to pray, fast and do righteous deeds.

The Act of Penitence is omitted. Ashes are imposed within the Mass after the Homily. If done outside the Mass, it should be within a Celebration of the Word of God. Simply imposing the ashes without the person hearing the Word of God makes the ritual an empty gesture. It is not proper to impose ashes on latecomers. They should be made to attend a succeeding Mass or a Celebration of God’s Word and receive the ashes from those celebrations.

The Rite may be found on page 6. The same rite must also be used for those who could not come to Mass due to sickness.

Ashes on the forehead are imposed in the form of a cross with any of the two formulae.

First Sunday of Lent

The First Sunday of Lent is an overture of what Lent is and a paradigm of a believer’s life. We are called to cling to God and his Word in times when we are tested. In the first reading, the Israelites profess their faith and respond to the God who saved them from Egypt. The second reading tells us that we who profess our faith in Christ will not be put to shame. The Gospel is the narrative of the Lord’s Temptation in the desert according to Luke.

As the First Sunday of Lent, the Entrance Song may be the Litany of the Saints. Also, those who are to be baptized may be introduced to the community.

In places where there is such an Initiation, readings from Cycle A may be used.

Second Sunday of Lent

The Second Sunday of Lent gives us a preview of the glory of the resurrection. In the Gospel according to Luke, the emphasis is Jesus’ willingness to pass through suffering and death. This passage and the resulting resurrection should be the lens by which the faithful should also see their own passage from death to life. The first reading speaks of a promise of God to Abram, a promise he fulfills once Abram goes into covenant with him. The second reading speaks of a glorification of our earthly bodies just as Christ’s earthly body was glorified after he suffered and died.

Third Sunday of Lent

The Third Sunday of Lent for Cycle C has the theme of the necessity for repentance. The Gospel speaks of the parable of the fig tree after comments about the death of certain Galileans. Jesus teaches us that it is not just those who are punished that die but everyone who does not bear fruit like the fig tree. God, however, gives time for repentance. The first reading speaks of Moses’ call to free the Israelites from Egypt in the name of God. The second reading picks up from the first – it teaches that the Israelites got lost in the desert because God wasn’t pleased with them. And so we who know better should repent and be pleasing to God.

When there are Catechumens, the first scrutiny is done during this Sunday and the readings from Cycle A are used.

Fourth Sunday of Lent

The Fourth Sunday is Laetare Sunday, the Sunday of praising. The sanctuary may be decorated with flowers and musical instruments may be played in the usual manner but still subdued compared to the full blast on Easter.

The theme for this Sunday is reconciliation as reflected in the Gospel passage which is the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The parable is situated after Jesus is questioned for eating with public sinners. The image of Jesus eating with sinners is an appropriate image of the eucharist. Jesus welcomes all of us who are sinners into his table and feeds us just as God feeds the Israelites, who had reconciled with him, with manna and the fruits of his land (Reading I) and the merciful father in the parable who welcomes back and makes a feast for his prodigal son who has come back from death. The second reading calls us to be reconciled with God.

When there are Catechumens, the second scrutiny is done during this Sunday and the readings from Cycle A are used.

Fifth Sunday of Lent

The fifth Sunday of Lent has the theme of forgiveness. The Lord does something new and forgets the things of the past and by his grace, gives life back to the barren desert (Reading I). It is through Jesus who makes it possible for us to be reconciled to God that we are forgiven; we leave the things of the past and hold on to our faith in him (Reading II). The Gospel is about the adulterous unnamed woman whom Jesus saves from stoning and admonishes to sin no more.

When there are Catechumens, the third scrutiny is done during this Sunday and the readings from Cycle A are used.

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

This Sunday is both an opening for the Holy Week and the celebration of the Passion for the Sunday Cycle. The first part of the Eucharistic celebration commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on the week before he died. The second part celebrates his passion and death.

Holy Week

Holy Week has as its purpose the remembrance of Christ’s passion, beginning with his Messianic entrance into Jerusalem. At the chrism Mass on Holy Thursday morning the bishop, concelebrating Mass with his body of priests, blesses the oils and consecrates the chrism (GNLYC 31).

During Holy Week the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth, beginning with his messianic entrance into Jerusalem. The Lenten season lasts until the Thursday of this week. The days of Holy Week, from Monday to Thursday inclusive, have precedence over all other celebrations. It is not fitting that Baptisms and Confirmations be celebrated on these days (PS 27).

Feast of the Chair of Peter (22 February)

The Feast of the Chair of Peter finds its origin in the Roman feast of Paternalia, which is a commemoration of the dead ancestors, the dead father. The feast of the chair of Peter is a Christianized version of this Roman feast, this time celebrating the chair of the Romans’ father in faith – Saint Peter, its first bishop, and the office of the Pope as the father of faith of the entire Church.

The sanctuary may be decorated with flowers. During the Mass, the Gloria is sung but the alleluia is not. The Credo is also not said.

Solemnity of Saint Joseph (19 March)

Refer to the article on page and to the Ordo. The sanctuary may be decorated with flowers. One image of Saint Joseph may be placed in the sanctuary adorned with flowers. The Gloria is sung and the Credo is said. The Alleluia is still not sung.

Solemnity of the Annunciation (25 March)

This solemnity is not so much a Lenten feast than a feast in anticipation of Christmas. The Annunciation is part of the Christmas cycle as it marks the event wherein the angel of the Lord announced to Mary her role in the work of salvation and the start of Mary’s pregnancy. On this day, the sanctuary may be decorated with flowers. The Gloria is sung and the Credo is said. The Alleluia is not sung.

Penitential Celebrations

During the season of Lent, celebrations that are meant to foster meditation on God’s Word and prompt the faithful to be reconciled with God are encouraged. The Order for these celebrations may be found in first volume of the Rites of the Catholic Church. Copies may be requested from the DMLA office or through email.

On the Issue of “Baccalaureate” Masses

“Baccalaureate” Masses must follow the liturgy of the day according to the Ordo. The Eucharist is always a celebration of the Paschal Mystery and not merely a backdrop for another occasion.

Since most, if not all, “Baccalaureate” Masses occur during the Season, it is a must that the spirit of the season be observed. The Gloria, unless it is a solemnity, and the Alleluia should not be sung.

Diplomas and medals may be brought in procession during the Entrance and not the Preparation of Gifts. Bread and wine and gifts for the poor may always be brought in the procession of gifts. Symbolic offerings are liturgically unsound.

The proper of the Baccalaureate Mass is found in the Supplement to the Roman Sacramentary.

A: Ayon sa General Instruction of the Roman Missal (49 at 101), ang dinadala ng mga tao sa “offertory” procession ay bread and wine at gifts for the poor and the needs of the Church. Wala na itong binabanggit tungkol sa bulaklak at kandila o mga tiyak na mga puwedeng ialay. Kung magdadala po ng kahit ano sa “offertory,” isipin po muna kung ito ba ay puwedeng ibigay sa mahihirap o pumupuno sa pangangailangang totoo ng simbahan.

Ang kalis naman ay dapat nakahanda na sa side table sa may altar at dadalhin ito sa altar ng umaalalay sa pari.

Lenten Devotions

Lent is the best time for us to practice the virtue of prayer, fasting and abstinence, and almsgiving. Prayer gives us strength spiritually and physically to fast and abstain and give to the poor. There are two ways by which we can do prayer: in the Liturgy which is the prayer of the Church and through devotions. Liturgy is the public and official worship of the Church while devotions are various external practices such as personal prayers, hymns, observances attached to particular times or places, insignia, medals, habits or customs. Animated by an attitude of faith, such external practices manifest the particular relationship of the faithful with the Divine Persons, or the Blessed Virgin Mary in her privileges of grace and those of her titles which express them, or with the Saints in their configuration with Christ or in their role in the Church’s life” (DPPD#8).

The most popular and oldest devotion in Lent is the “Via Crucis” or Way of the Cross, popularly known as the Stations of the Cross. This devotion came from the Holy Land. The pilgrim nun, Egeria, left us a witness of how the people in the Holy Land celebrated the Holy Week by following the events in the actual places where Jesus suffered and died. It spread during the Middle Ages and it was done by pilgrims to remember in a special way the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection by following these events in the place where they happened and in a way, walk with the Lord to Calvary. But since not everyone could go to the Holy Land, this devotion was eventually done anywhere. This devotion helps us to see how our Lord Jesus saved us through his death on the cross. It helps us appreciate the Liturgy of Good Friday particularly the Veneration of the Cross (DPPD#131). This prayer was promoted by St. Leonardo da Porto Maurizio and was approved by the Apostolic See and given an indulgence (DPPD#132). We must remember that the way of the cross must be fourteen; alternatives must be approved by the Holy See and must be gospel based (DPPD#134).

Another starting point for our devotional practices would be to be with the Mother of our Lord as she sees his son’s suffering, death and resurrection. The Via Matris (Way of the Mother) is a devotion to the Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Sorrows, prayed like the station of the cross but with the images of the seven sorrows of our Lady (Mary accepts the prophecy of Simeon, Mary flees to Egypt with Jesus and Joseph, Mary seeks his lost Son Jesus in Jerusalem, Mary meets his Son on the way to Calvary, Mary stand near the Cross, Mary received the dead-body of Jesus and Mary places his son’s body in the tomb awaits for his resurrection). The Via Matris existed in embryonic form since the sixteenth century, while its present form dates from the nineteenth century (DPPD#136).

The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows is most popularly known as the “Seven Dolors.” It originated in the thirteenth century and prayed using the seven dolors rosary made by the Servites (Order of Servants of Mary). The mysteries for reflection are the same with Via Matris.

There are more devotions, popular piety, exercises done by us Filipinos. But we must remember that these should draw us more to participate in the Liturgy. It will help us to make our Lent, our journey towards the Paschal Mystery, more meaningful and more fruitful. Liturgy and devotions are there to make us closer to the Lord and they make us more holy this season of Lent.

Solemnity of St. Joseph

The feast of Saint Joseph on the 19th of March, which appears around the year 800 in a French calendar, did not become widespread until the 14th-15th century. There was a feast of St. Joseph in the Roman Breviary of 1482, but the first Mass celebrated in his honor at Rome was in 1505. Certain saints and spiritual writers were especially devoted to St. Joseph: St. Margaret of Cortona, St. Bridget of Sweden, St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Bernardine of Siena and John Gerson of Paris. Finally, the Carmelite Friars recognized his feast and included it in their order’s calendar in 1498. In the East, however, the feast was celebrated as early as the 5th century according to the Coptic calendar but on a different date. In 1621, Pope Gregory XV made the feast a holy day of obligation, but that is no longer observed. The feast may even be moved outside Lent if the National Bishop’s Conference so desires.

The genealogy of St. Joseph is given in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. We also know from Scripture that he is a carpenter; and very likely, Jesus learned the same trade from him. He and his wife, Mary, were poor, as evidenced by the fact that they only offered turtle-doves at Mary’s purification. Scripture calls him a just man. On several crucial occasions, such as Mary’s pregnancy, the flight to Egypt and return to Palestine, he was instructed by an angel.

Pope Pius IX proclaimed him the patron of the Universal Church. He is also invoked in temporal and spiritual needs. The words of the Pharaoh in Genesis 14, 55 in reference to Joseph son of Jacob is often applied to St. Joseph: “Go to Joseph and do as he tells you.” He is also patron of carpenters, travelers and refugees, Christian families and homes, the poor, the aged and the dying.

The life of St. Joseph calls us to listen to God’s Word and to do God’s will. It calls us to be brave enough to face the critical and difficult situations in our lives and trusting in the Lord and being patient in the face of trouble.
